How much longer?
I wonder to myself as I check the GPS for the umpteenth time. I’m headed to the inaugural Women Who Wander Outdoor Retreat in south Texas to spend the weekend with 600 of my new best friends.
Let me explain. I love to hike, pedal, and paddle. Hands down my favorite modes of travel, especially when exploring a new destination. As a recent Texas transplant, I was searching for hiking opportunities when I stumbled upon the retreat.
With Google maps I determine that Concan is only 392 miles from my East Texas home. About six and a half hours of driving. Pretty doable by Texas standards. In case you’re not aware, Texas is big. Really big.
With a few clicks on the keypad, I’m registered and ready to go.
It’s a cliche’ to say that there’s something for everyone, but at the Women Who Wander Outdoor Retreat, there is.
Hiking, kayaking, yoga, archery, outdoor cooking, even a painting session, there’s no limit to the variety of courses available.
In between scheduled sessions, lectures, panels, and demonstrations are offered – I was pleasantly surprised to see the Solo Women Travel Panel consisting of three travel writers.
Also available; star parties, live music, off-site bat flight, raffles, a silent auction, and more.
Accommodations are on your own, with discounts offered at loads of lodging partners. I stayed at the Frio Country Resort, home base for the retreat. My cabin was a short walk from the communal meals and retreat registration, but most importantly, from the crystal clear, turquoise blue water of the Frio River.
Greeted with a swag bag, weekend itinerary, and a cold Austin Eastcider by friendly volunteers, I unpack my bags and get ready for a weekend of fun.
I tried a guided meditation class and sound bath, hiked to the top of Old Baldy at Garner State Park, and kayaked down that gorgeous river. Sunset yoga? Yes, please.
The speakers were informative and entertaining. The hilarious Jen Hatmaker was the keynote, Jennifer Broome hosted Travel Tips & Tequila, but hanging out with so many like-minded women, all filled with an adventurous spirit was the real highlight.
And just in case you didn’t think it could get any better, it can!
The entire event benefitted the Gear Up for Game Wardens program with an astounding $34,000 plus being donated to Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation.
If you’re in Texas, or even if you’re not, save the date, March 27 through 29, for the 2020 Women Who Wander Outdoor Retreat.
After all, it’s like summer camp. For grown-ups. With wine. Just saying…
