All-inclusive resorts are experiencing a rise in popularity. As beleaguered travelers grow weary of being nickeled and dimed to death with checked baggage fees, hidden resort costs, and sky-high wifi upgrades, it’s no wonder that many vacationers are embracing the all-inclusive model.
I recently returned from a five-day stay at RIU Palace Pacifico in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. I found it extremely relaxing and a nice break from a more typically jam-packed vacation schedule. Stress-free arrangements made the experience simple, leaving plenty of time for relaxation.
The service was exceptional from check-in to check out, the room was huge and included a separate sitting area, even a fully stocked mini-bar. The grounds were stunning, enormous swimming pool with the requisite swim-up bar, and a gorgeous private beach.
Entertainment was offered poolside during the day and every night in the main lounge, think cruise ship style, and there were four a la carte restaurants, which provided variety in the evening.
But is this type of travel right for you? There are a few things to consider before you book that trip. Read on for our top pros and cons.
VALUE:
Pro: Generally, all meals, drinks (including alcoholic beverages), entertainment, and activities are included in the price; tipping is also included at many resorts. No nasty credit card surprises when you return home.
Con: The quality of all-inclusive resorts can vary significantly. Do some research, read reviews, and seek out recommendations from other travelers before booking.
FOOD:
Pro: You won’t go hungry! Most resorts offer enormous buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with plenty of live cooking stations. Typically several a la carte restaurants are available for dinner; some resorts require reservations. You’ll find snack bars and ice cream shops by the pool, and if that’s not enough, there’s 24-hour room service. It’s always mealtime somewhere on the property, making it easy for families who might need something outside of the typical meal times.
Con: If you’re a foodie, you may not be satisfied. The food is good, but not great, and eating at the resort for more than a few days can become tedious. Pro tip: Check the reviews carefully; you don’t want to be stuck with subpar food for an entire vacation.
AMENITIES:
Pro: Loungers with full service on a gorgeous private beach, poolside towels and floats, paddleboards, sunrise yoga, fitness classes, snorkeling, salsa dance classes, cooking workshops, and for those traveling with children, full-service daycare! Spa treatments, golf, and most motorized water sports are extra.
Con: Resorts are often enormous, which can result in crowds. Some resorts are narrowing their niche and offering adults-only stays, while some are more kid-centric. Read carefully before making your selection. Pro tip: Check for availability in shoulder seasons, when weather is still fantastic, and there tend to be fewer people.
CONVENIENCE:
Pro: With a couple of clicks, you can plan and book your entire vacation, including airport transfer. An on-staff concierge will help secure tours and can offer loads of local information. Everything you need is literally at your fingertips. Many people use the resort as the sole destination of their trip.
Con: All-inclusive resorts can be isolating, as they tend to be located away from city centers, making it a bit more challenging to experience the destination.
Having stayed in another Riu property in Jamaica a few years back, I did experience a sense of deja vu at this resort. Although I ventured off property several times, it can be difficult to leave; it’s easy to feel like you’re paying for things twice while straying from the resort.
BOTTOM LINE:
As with any travel, there are always pros and cons. Your decision will ultimately rest on what type of experience you desire.
