Finding the perfect gift can be challenging. Aside from crowded shopping malls and dizzying arrays of products, the pressure to make the ideal selection can leave even the most seasoned shopper stressed out. This year, why not give the gift of travel?
I’m not necessarily talking about a new piece of luggage (although that’s okay) or a seven-day Mediterranean cruise – but if you can swing that, I hope that I’m on your list.
The gift of travel, or experience, can be the most meaningful gift of all.
The memories will last a lifetime, and it can be done without breaking the bank.
It’s best not to hand over a trip and yell Surprise! We’re all busy with many commitments, so anything with hard and fast dates could be trouble. Even if itinerary changes are allowed, hefty fees can be incurred, plus there’s the hassle of making new arrangements.
Hotel and airline gift cards are great but think beyond them.
Consider an experience in a nearby city. One of the best gifts I ever received was a certificate to paraglide in a town that was less than two hours from my home. It was something I wanted to do but would never have purchased for myself.
Is the recipient an art lover? Tickets to a museum or a special exhibit are both options. Foodie? A certificate for a hot new eatery or a food tour. How about a couple of laps on a speedway in an exotic automobile for the car lover? Outdoorsy type? A certificate for a cabin rental and activities at a state or national park. The choices are limitless.
An experience alone makes a great gift, but there’s no law saying you can’t add to it. Make a gift basket with a guidebook or travel journal, include a hotel stay, and throw in a couple of souvenirs representing the destination. You can even provide a suggested itinerary, map, or another experience. Have fun and be creative.
Maybe someone on your list has a trip planned already?
Purchase a surf lesson for the friend going to Costa Rica. Try to think about their interests and hobbies. It seems like a no-brainer, but research says we tend to give gifts that align with what we like. Remember, just because you’re not into a particular activity doesn’t mean others aren’t.
This year, leave the crowded malls to everyone else and give a gift that will inspire a little wanderlust in the recipient and maybe in you too.
Wishing you and yours the most joyous Christmas season.
