What kind of idiot thinks this is a good idea?
Hands pressed firmly against the cold railing; I stare into the abyss. I feel as alone as I ever have, although I’m surrounded by people. Happy and animated, they are taking pictures and conversing, many in languages I do not recognize.
The sky is cloudless and infinite. Brilliant blue contrasts sharply with the vivid red hues of the canyon walls. The air is clean and crisp. Patches of snow are nestled between the trees that cling precariously to the ledges of the canyon wall.
I can’t see the bottom.
Words, even pictures, can’t do this massive canyon justice. Its beauty is overwhelming.
Tomorrow morning I’ll trek to the bottom of this canyon. The Grand Canyon. Alone.
Down the South Kaibab. Up the Bright Angel. Two Trails. One slightly overweight, middle-aged woman.
Like I said, what kind of idiot thinks this is a good idea?
