That’s the tagline for a Hikoga class being offered at the Black Creek Trail in North Alabama.
Now that it’s starting to feel like summer, which for many, myself included, means fun in the sun and plenty of outdoor activity, it’s time to get out and try something new. We’ve got it all here in the Greater Gadsden Area…….walking trails, kayaking, boating, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. But for today, it’s all about the hike. Well, that and some yoga thrown in for good measure.
I’ve talked about the hiking opportunities, as well as prospects for yoga in the Gadsden area before, so it’s only natural that an event called Hikoga caught my eye. A combination of two of my favorite pastimes, I thought I’d give it a try.
I meet our fearless leader, Danielle Fryer, at the pavilion at the designated time.
We introduce ourselves to one another and away we go. Leaving the main trail, we turn right and stop for our first yoga pose. After a fairly long Warrior 1, we head. into the woods, stopping every 15 minutes for another yoga pose. All poses are standing, no mat required.
I visit the Black Creek trail a lot, but this class has put a different spin on the trek. It’s nice to break the hike up with yoga and it feels incredible to stretch and be mindful on the trail. After a couple of suggestions and adjustments from Danielle in Triangle pose, my back pops like a bowl of Rice Krispies getting hit with some milk. Smiling, she says “You’re welcome!”
I love hiking. I love yoga.
This has been 90 minutes of pure bliss for me. We close our time with a few simple stretches and even take time to hug a tree.
Have you wanted to give yoga a try? Maybe you want to spend more time on the trail? Next time, consider celebrating nature by combining both! You’ll love it. I’ve seen programs offered at State Parks and hiking trails all over the country. Find one close to you today.
So go forth, bliss out, and mind the tree huggers!
