Tyler Paddle: Zen on Tap in East Texas

What’s SUP East Texas?

If you’ve been looking for something new to try, Tyler Paddle has got you covered. This East Texas locally owned business rents stand-up paddleboards (SUP) on Lake Tyler’s gorgeous tree-lined shores.

Options abound at Tyler Paddle.

You can rent a board(s) and spend a couple of hours touring the lake, participate in a SUP yoga session; they even offer sunset and full moon group paddles.

Curiosity piqued, I sign up for a SUP yoga class. While I’ve done yoga before, it’s always been on dry land. Explaining that I had no SUP experience whatsoever, owner Holly Ingram, offered assurances.

“You’ll do great!” she exclaims enthusiastically. “It’s easy to get the hang of, and you can always paddle while remaining seated.”

After a brief introduction and simple to follow how-to, we’re paddling towards a small cove where we’ll drop anchor and begin the class.

SUP yoga uses traditional moves with the added challenge of performing them on an unstable surface. Modifications are offered throughout the session, making it accessible to everyone.

An hour passes quickly as we end the practice lying on the boards. Clouds drift lazily overhead as we gently sway on the water. The combination of water, nature, and yoga is relaxing and delicious—definitely a stress buster.

Holly announces that we can paddle around the cove for a bit before returning the boards after class. Taking her up on the offer, I find that paddleboarding is fairly easy to get the hang of and offers a unique perspective of the surroundings.

But that’s not all that the activity offers.

Stand-up paddleboarding engages the muscles in the core, building abdominal strength and lean muscle tone, while at the same time strengthening arms, legs, back, and shoulders. And since you’re having so much fun, you’ll probably keep ta it longer, resulting in a higher calorie burn.

“Paddleboarding is for all ages and a great way to exercise while having fun,” says Ingram.

“All of our customers receive hands-on paddleboarding instruction to enhance their enjoyment.” Beaming, she adds, “I’ve made an executive decision to get some wet suits so we can continue into the fall and take advantage of the beauty of the season.”
